Gone for more than 13,000 years, wholly mammoths walked the grounds that now make up the campus at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This week, a life-size mammoth sculpture was installed outside the southwest corner of the Natural History Building. The wholly mammoth was the largest animal since the dinosaurs to have lived in Illinois.
The 12-foot-tall, 15-foot-long sculpture was created by Taylor Studios in Rantoul as part of the “Art in Architecture” program for capital building projects on campus. The Natural History Building, which houses the School of Earth, Society and Environment and teaching programs in the School of Integrative Biology, received a $79 million renovation in 2015.
